How to Start 2020 with 20/20 Vision: The Importance of Long-Range Planning

– So, here we are heading into the third week of January How's your New Year's resolutions holding out? At the health club where I belong for seven or eight years it's always interesting to watch the new people coming in at the first few weeks of January because I've made a New Year's resolution, and I'll have to admit there's a little bit of snarky in me that says I wonder how long they're going to last

I mean, but hey, it takes everything I've got just to get myself in there, so I'm not gonna fuss at them or you if you've made that New Year's resolution However, I'm not here today to talk about New Year's resolutions that sometimes don't last past March I'm here today with you to talk about the power of vision I'm talkin' long-term, long-range vision that pulls our head up and looks out into the future and asks the question, how are the actions and the decisions that I'm making today how is that gonna effect the world five months from now? Five years from now? So when I was writing this last week, I heard the old phrase, life is hard by the yard, but a chinch by the inch And, I get that, but folks, a lot of times I can get trapped in the minutiae of today's to do list, and I forget to lift my head up and go, where am I going? What am I doing? Do I like where I'm at? How do we get from here to there? And so, we not only need to do carpenter work, we need to do architect work

You with me? Carpenter work is that daily grind of head down work hard, get 'er done This is what I accomplish today, and that's important, and that's where we spend most of our time But, we've also gotta find a little bit of time and a little bit of energy to do the work of an architect, where we're planning five months from now, five years from now, and where are we going? And, how are we getting there? So having 2020 vision for 2020, I'm not just going with New Year let's all make a New Year's resolution There's a place for that, and I hope that helps you I'm calling us and challenging you and me, us, to think about today, these two vision statements and I'm just gonna give 'em to you

I'm not gonna do the whole 30-minute lecture that goes with each of 'em I just want these two statements to sort of simmer in your brain until we come back together again next week Here's the first one, it's awesome I'm still trying to wrap my head around it Comes from Nelson Henderson in the 1860's who said, "The true meaning of life is to plant trees under who's shade you never expect to sit

" I'm gonna run that by ya again "The true meaning of life is to plant trees under who's shade you never expect to sit" In other words, what are you doing today? And how is that going to effect the next generation? How is that gonna effect your children's children? So, here's the second one "When God gives us a dream, it always comes one size too big so that we can grow into it" Let me try it again, "When God gives us a dream, it usually comes one size too big so that we can grow into it

" Oh God, no I, I can't do that, that's too big Well, one of the greatest visions of my lifetime has been from President John F Kennedy, I don't know if he got it from God or not, but on May 25th, 1961, President Kennedy said to the nation, "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal before this decade is out of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth" And, on July 20th, 1969, three thousand and nine days later, Neil Armstrong walked on the moon Folks, I know we've got deadlines for this week, we've got stuff, we got boxes, we gotta check 'em all, but let's not forget to set aside a little bit of time and a little bit of energy to do that architect work and envisioning work that looks out into the future, whether that's next year or even into the next generation

Hey, thank you for joining me today, being with me for a few minutes It's always good to be with you You're in my prayers If I can do anything to serve you, let me know God bless
